Dougie Imrie’s men are the visitors to Balmoor tomorrow as Peterhead FC face Greenock Morton in the first competitive game of the season.
The Premier Sports Cup clash is the first of four games in the group stage of the cup with a 3pm KO.
The last meeting of the two sides was back in November 2018 as the two teams competed in a Scottish Cup 3rd round replay with Morton running out 3-0 winners on the day.
From Ryan Strachan: “It’s 10 weeks since our last competitive outing and we’re very much looking forward to the league cup phase this season. We’ve spent some time over Summer assembling new recruits and maintaining a solid core and it’s now time to start putting the work together where results now matter.
Our pre season has been quite good for the large part, we’ve added extra training sessions as opposed to games and you can at times see that on the pitch with good relationships starting to build. We obviously faced a disappointing result last Saturday but by and large everything else has been above par. Yes we would’ve liked to get more players more minutes but pre season is about building relationships, setting culture and implementing standards. The players are naturally fit and will now get the chance to play for more minutes gaining match sharpness.
Our opponents tomorrow will be a really stern test for us. Full-time so they will have a number of more sessions and games under their belts than we have, but that is only as good as the day itself. Our guys will be up for the test and have performed admirably against higher level opposition in recent years running Ayr United and Dundee Utd close, drawing with Patrick Thistle and beating Kelty Hearts and Dumbarton in respective competitions.
By and large our entire squad is fresh and injury-free for tomorrow’s match. David Wilson is close to returning after a calf injury but has missed all the fitness work so will need time. Niall McGinn is also working hard to improve fitness and to be considered as our core squad now have 3-4 weeks training under their belts”.
