Peterhead after two wins against East Fife and Bonnyrigg were looking for the ‘hat-trick’ of victories in what turned out to be a tricky tie against a battling Elgin side at Borough Briggs. Elgin started the better team with Kian Leslie proving a handful with many darting runs on the roght-hand side and after 24 minutes veteran, Brian Cameron, played a through ball to Lewis Hyde. The ball bounced once and with only the keeper to beat, the former Inverness Caley midfielder, lobbed the ball over the head of the Oluyemi and into the open net. Elgin were able to use the full width of the bobbly pitch and found it easier to control their efforts and Oluyemi managed to deny any further scoring with two wonderful saves. As half time approached the Blue Toon began to play some good football of their own and a Kieran Shanks header inside the penalty area was saved by keeper Glavin. Then Cieran Dunne missed a glorious opportunity when he saw his shot glide over bar from what looked like just a tap in. It was a glaring miss as the teams went in at the break Peterhead were looking for that extra once of quality in front of goal.
Elgin were on the back foot at the start of the second period as Peterhead showed some good possessive football creating a good few chances and began to cause the home defence a few worries. On 53 minutes Seb Ross had the best of the efforts when his right foot shot looked to hit the net, but he watched in agony the ball trundling past the wrong side of the post. Shortly after, Cieran Dunne was ordered off for an alleged foul near the corner of the Peterhead penalty area. Six minutes later Max Barry then had an effort that flew past Glavin. Dayshonne Golding the influential ex Cove Rangers forward had a hand in Elgin’s second goal on 61 minutes. His forward play put through a pass inside the area to Dylan Gavin whose first time shot eased past Oluyemi to make it 2-0. In an attempt to regain control of the game Ben Armour’s shot was saved on 71 minutes and then the more Elgin pushed forward the more threatening they looked. Efforts to increase the scoreline failed and in the end an injury hit Elgin side claimed the bragging rights with their second win of the season against The Blue Toon.
