Peterhead made yet another trip down to Edinburgh as they travelled to face an in form Spartans side at Ainslie Park. Both sides headed into the game with unbeaten league runs, with Spartans pulling off an impressive win against Premiership side Ross County in the League Cup and the Blue Toon winning their third league game on the spin against Stranraer. Peterhead made one change from last weekend, Scott Ross dropped out of the squad following an injury with Ryan Strachan taking his spot in the starting line up as he made his first start since his testimonial match at the start of July.
Spartans started the brighter of the two sides and had a couple of chances with Blair Henderson heading a half chance wide before Cammy Russell’s free kick was claimed by Stuart McKenzie. Peterhead then created the best chance of the first half as Seb Ross was played through on goal before firing into the side netting. Peterhead were then dealt a blow as Andy McCarthy’s afternoon was ended early, broken ribs and a punctured lung meant he was replaced by Jack Brown. Russell got onto the end of a good Spartans move but fired over the bar just before the break.
Half Time: Spartans 0-0 Peterhead
The second half was dominated by the Blue Toon with Spartans creating little to nothing unless it came from a set piece. Birthday boy Cammy Smith had a half chance for Peterhead with his effort from the edge of the area drifting wide. The Blue Toon then had a free kick of their own which a Spartans defender headed onto Jason Brown which then hit the post before falling into Stuart Carswell’s arms. The final chance of the game also fell Peterhead’s way with Jamie Dishington having to clear a looping ball off the line, perhaps if the wind had been in the opposite direction the Blue Toon would have been leaving the capital with three points.
