The Spartans 2 Peterhead 2

Peterhead took to Ainslie Park on Saturday as The Blue Toon faced The Spartans.

With The Spartans winning all three matches at Balmoor this season, Peterhead were only victorious in their one trip to Ainslie Park back in November.

Starting XI: McKenzie, Goldie, Jas. Brown (C), Ross, Duffy, McCarthy, Jack Brown, Pawlett, Stewart, Ritchie, O’Keefe.

As the match kicked off in Edinburgh, both sides enjoyed equal possession as the game unfolded with McKenzie making a fine save to deny the visitors of an opener. With the visitors on the front foot, Jason Brown was in position on the Peterhead goalmouth to deny The Spartans opener as McKenzie fumbled the cross played into the Peterhead penalty area. In response, a ball was played across from Alfie Srewart into Hamish Ritchie who found The Spartans bottom corner to put The Blue Toon in front. With Peterhead leading by a goal, The Blue Toon had plenty possession however Cameron Russells goal meant The Spartans had an equaliser. As half time loomed, both teams searched to find an advantage however neither side were able to capitalise.

HT: The Spartans 1 – 1 Peterhead.

As the match resumed and Peterhead kicked off the second half, The Blue Toon got off on the front foot as they tested The Spartans defence with a series of corners. With the corners continuing and The Spartans back line under pressure, Jason Brown’s deflected shot from distance is over Spartans goalkeeper Blair Carswell’s head and narrowly over the home crossbar. Eager to break the deadlock once again, The Spartans make their first change as Denholm replaces Dishington; with the home side looking to gain authority of the match. Against the run of play, Cameron Russell found himself in space on the edge of the Peterhead penalty area and with Spartans’ first attempt of the second half, Russell fired his shot past McKenzie and into the back of the Peterhead net. With the hosts in the lead, The Blue Toon responded with a double change as Rory McAllister and Joe McKee came on for Jack Brown and Hamish Ritchie. Aiming to make an instant impact, McAllister fired a shot goal-wards from thirty yards out however the striker couldn’t keep his attempt down. With twenty minutes of regular time to play, Andy McCarthy made way for Jordon Brown. With both sides enjoying equal spells of possession, Scott Ross was cautioned for a foul in the middle of the park. Searching for an equaliser; Conor O’Keefe created space for Jordon Brown on the edge of The Spartans box and with Brown’s cross, found the head of McAllister. Unfortunately Rory couldn’t direct his diving header effort on target and his attempt was wide of the near post. The home side made their second change of the afternoon as Jones replaced McNulty. With McAllister causing problems for The Spartans defence, a brilliant through ball from Alfie Stewart found the Peterhead talisman and he slid the ball underneath Carswell and into The Spartans net; however the linesman’s flag was up and Rory’s equaliser was chalked off for offside. As the clock ticked down, Peterhead made their final changes as Alfie Stewart and Caleb Goldie made way for Robert Ward and Danny Strachan; closely followed by a Spartans switch of Thompson and Brown on for Whyte and Henderson. In the final moments, it was Peterhead who were on the attack and once again pressurising the hosts’ defence. Into the sixth minute of injury time, a long ball forward by McKenzie was met by McAllister who managed to find Ward in The Spartans box. Ward tried to play the ball across goal however his ball only went as far as Watson who turned the ball into his own net.

With once again another late goal, The Blue Toon rescued a point in their final away day of the league campaign.
