Peterhead travelled to Ochilview Park on Saturday as The Blue Toon faced league leaders Stenhousemuir in their 30th match of the League 2 campaign.

Peterhead had the opportunity to strengthen their grip on second place; as the hosts aimed to go eighteen points clear with six games remaining.

Starting XI: McKenzie, D. Strachan, Goldie, R. Strachan, Duffy, McCarthy (C), Pawlett, Jack Brown, Ritchie, O’Keefe, Shanks.

It was the hosts who kicked off at Ochilview Park and after an end-to-end start, Stenhousemuir’s Matthew Aitken was first to test the goalkeeper as McKenzie deflected the striker’s shot from the edge of the Peterhead box. It’s was not long however until The Blue Toon had an early chance of their own after good link-up play between Pawlett, Duffy and O’Keefe, the latter tried his luck from distance but his shot was well caught by Jamieson. With the game opening up and chances falling for both sides, Rodden’s acrobatic effort was high of McKenzie’s goal. With O’Keefe looking to produce from the left wing, his curling effort from the outside of the box was superbly saved by Jamieson; denying O’Keefe a goal of the season contender. With half an hour gone, the first player to enter the referee’s book was Stenhousemuir midfielder Kirkpatrick after a high and rash challenge on McCarthy. With half time approaching, long range efforts from both sides were well dealt with or off target; as no real chances prevailed. After a foul on the edge of the Peterhead box, Kirkpatrick’s free kick effort was easily collected by McKenzie; closely followed by a yellow card for Nathaniel Wedderburn for a harsh challenge on Peter Pawlett.

HT: Stenhousemuir 0 – 0 Peterhead.

Peter Pawlett got the ball rolling for the second half and as both sides looked to have come out fired up, Shanks was the first Peterhead player to receive a yellow card after an arial duel with opposition defender Nicky Jamieson. Stenhousemuir’s first replacement of the afternoon saw Jordan Kirkpatrick make way for Adam Brown. After a booking for Kinlay Bilham, the hosts made a double substitution as Rodden and Aitken were replaced by O’Reilly and Yates. With twenty minutes of regular time remaining, O’Keefe found Shanks with a cross in the box however the striker’s headed effort from close range was narrowly high. Still pushing for an opener, Peterhead’s double substitution saw Rory McAllister and Alfie Stewart come on for Jack Brown and Conor O’Keefe. With ten minutes to play, the hosts made their final replacements as Wedderburn was replaced by Jacobs and Taylor came on for Berry. In the closing minutes, Hamish Ritchie was replaced by Joe McKee as The Blue Toon aimed to play for a draw. Into injury time, a late corner for Stenhousemuir was met by Yates, however his header was marginally wide of McKenzie’s goal. As the game drew to a close, Robert Ward replaced Kieran Shanks for Peterhead’s final substitution of the afternoon.

After a first half full of chances and a fiery second half, it ended goalless and the points were shared at Ochilview Park.
