Annan Athletic v Peterhead

Sep 8, 2023

Peterhead once again make a long trip down south on Saturday where The Blue Toon face League 1 opposition Annan Athletic in the SPFL Trust Trophy. After brushing Aberdeen Reserves aside at North Lodge last month, Peterhead were drawn away; taking them nearer the Scottish border than last weekend’s jaunt to Stranraer.

The Blue Toon have had success in this fixture in the past; with 12 wins in total over Annan and coming out victorious in 4 of the last 5 meetings.

Peterhead player manager Ryan Strachan shares his thoughts ahead of Saturday’s match:

“We as a club are looking forward to tomorrow’s challenge, it’s an opportunity to test ourselves against higher level opposition away from home in a cup where we want to go as far as we can. We’ve narrowly lost our last two matches so are looking to overturn a minor dip in form. We can accept that a small change to shape last week didn’t really suit us so quickly resorted back to what we’ve became familiar with and worked on that at training. Tomorrow we have to respect the opposition, they looked a firm League 1 side when I watched them twice versus Clyde and they’ve had a window to bolster their squad so we expect a really firm test.

Co-Manager Jordon Brown: “Naturally disappointed to be coming off the back of 2 defeats, both different types of games. 1st half last week we altered the formation and it didn’t work and combined with an unusual flat performance left us too much to recover. We did get a slight reaction when we reverted back to a more familiar way of playing second half but we know ourselves we need to be better than we were in all aspects to be successful this season. Another long trip for us but we will freshen the team up slightly and the return of Shanks gives us another attacking option and infectious energy. We know Annan is a very tough test fresh from promotion and stepping up a league with 2 good recent results but a great opportunity for us to show a reaction against a team in league above and stop our losing run as don’t want losing games to become a habit. We are delighted with how we have finished the window squad-wise barring the injury to Duthie and we know now as a group what we have from now until at least January. The competition for places is going to be strong and as everyone gels, we are looking for a good reaction tomorrow to take into league business next week with everyone’s confidence lifted again. Gibbons, Duthie and Goldie missing tomorrow.

Peterhead will look to capitalise on Annan Athletic’s poor start to the season, currently sitting 9th in the League 1 table with 4 points from 5 matches.
