Peterhead complete their League 1 fixtures this afternoon at play-off bound Airdrie with Blue Toon manager Jim McInally determined to end his side’s campaign with a fifth three-point haul in six unbeaten outings.
A win could see the Balmoor side finish in fifth place however no-one in the visiting squad is counting their chickens against a Diamonds side that have not tasted defeat in the league since early December.
Jim said: “We will look to finish on a high however there has been talk of Airdrie going for records in terms of an unbeaten run and I would imagine that will be driving them on. If, however they have one eye on Tuesday night and their play-off with Montrose, then we will look to take full advantage of that.”
“I cannot see that being the case however as Airdrie’s professionalism has been fantastic in recent weeks. They could have thrown in the towel after Cove Rangers grabbed that injury time equaliser a few weeks ago but they haven’t. They have just kept going and going. They deserve great credit for that.”
Ian Murray’s side have been successful in the three meetings between the teams this season and the Peterhead players have been charged with showing how much they have grown in this campaign as Jim explained: “In the first meeting between the gap between the teams was evident. Airdrie were three up and cruising and whilst we got a couple of goals back losing 3-2 flattered us.”
“In the first game at their place we were right in things until mistakes just before and after half-time allowed Airdrie to be in command. We lost 3-1 but the gap between the teams was not as big.”
“In the next game at our place Airdrie won 1-0 with their goal coming from after a miskick and we had the misfortune to hit the underside of the bar. To me that showed the gap had narrowed further.”
“We have to use this game to show the gap has gone.
Team news – Jason Brown is again absent through suspension with his central defensive partner, on-loan Hamilton Accies defender Shaun Want, missing through injury. David Wilson and Russell McLean remain on the side-lines however Andrew McCarthy could be involved after his hamstring problem eased.
