“Big Andy must be quite cocky if he thinks he can score from there” – post match East Fife 1 Peterhead 3

Apr 30, 2021

Peterhead manager Jim McInally was delighted with his entire squad after they came from behind to defeat hosts East Fife 3-1 and ensure that they will be playing League 1 football next season.

The Blue Toon started slowly and fell behind to an Aaron Dunsmore goal however they were level by the break when Derek Lyle slotted in an equaliser.

Early into the second half Andrew McCarthy’s persistence won a free-kick and defender Andrew McDonald showed a side to his game that no-one in Peterhead had seen before when he rifled the dead ball into the net.

Local boy Danny Strachan scored his first ever senior goal to seal the win with McInally saying: “We made a poor start and gifted a goal away however we responded well which was great to see. For the first 20 minutes of the game East Fife were better than us but after that we were very good.”

“I was beginning to think we would not get an equaliser before the break but Ben Armour picked out Derek and he showed what he is all about with a terrific finish. I know it says he is 40 on his birth certificate but I am still not believing it as he plays like a much younger man and I am delighted that he scored that goal.”

“At the second goal Andy McCarthy did brilliantly to rob Scott Agnew. He was fouled as he got away and it could have been a last man challenge however all we got was the free-kick. I thought Derek was taken it but I saw Andy McDonald telling Del he was hitting it.”

“I was thinking that Andy was being a bit cocky if he was saying that he would score from there as I have never seen him do that. Low and behold he stepped up and crashed the ball into the net. I did not know he had that in his locker but I was delighted to see that.”

“We were able to bring on substitutes in a good frame of mind at that stage and they all played their part as well. Hamish Ritchie came on and set up Danny to score and I am delighted for him that he got his goal and I am delighted for the squad who all played their part in a great win.”
