A win for Peterhead against visiting Premiership side St Johnstone would send them through, as would a draw and a penalty kick success, and picking up one point may also be enough to progress as a best loser however Balmoor manager Jim McInally is not contemplating trying to only hold the Perth side for 90 minutes.
McInally said: “A draw could take us to nine points and that could be the magic number to get us through in second place regardless of penalties. It would be even better if we then won on penalties as we would top the group, however playing for a draw has not crossed my mind. We are not kind of team so we will go out and try and finish in top spot by winning the game.”
“If we end up drawing and going through, we will take it, but it is not something I will plan for. Whatever happens to be in a group with two Premiership sides and having it all to play for on the last day is a great effort from the team.”
“It would be great for them and for the club if we can step into the last 16.”
McInally is hoping for help from the elements as he explained: “According to the forecasts the wind is going to be up this afternoon. We have a fair idea of how to handle that however it is perhaps something that the St Johnstone players have not come across before.”
“They are a full-time team playing at the highest level so we are huge underdogs so if the wind makes it more of a level playing field, I will take it.”
