Peterhead defender Gary Mackenzie is set for a spell on the side-lines after picking up a head-knock in his first League 1 game for the Blue Toon that left him with little memory of their 2-0 defeat at Airdrie.
The one-time Scotland squad member joined the Balmoor side during the summer from St Mirren and was set to play his first 90 minutes since overcoming a knee injury until he was involved in a clash of heads early in the second half.
Mackenzie tried to play on after treatment however it was quickly recognised that the 35-year-old was not in a condition to do so and manager Jim McInally took him off.
McInally will now let the club’s medical staff decide when the stopper should return to action as he explained: “Gary was having an excellent game for us. He was doing the job we expected him to do by not only playing well but organising our defence and I do not want him out for any period of time.”
“However, he could not remember the score when he came off and he could not remember how he was injured. When you also consider Gary suffered a concussion playing with St Mirren up at Ross County last season, we will take our time with him.”
“He is getting checked out fully and he will return when it is safe to do so.”
