Derek Lyle to give more

Jul 29, 2020

Peterhead manager Jim McInally is delighted that striker Derek Lyle has agreed to take less but deliver more to the Blue Toon next season.

The 39 year old who scored more than 100 goals for Queen of the South during three stints at the Doonhamers as well as finding the net for Partick Thistle, East Stirling, Stirling Albion, Dundee, Hamilton Accies, Morton and Cowdenbeath during a career that started in 1999 has agreed to return to Balmoor for a third season with McInally set to use Lyle on and off the pitch.

The Peterhead manager explained: “Derek has agreed to come back despite being offered a lesser deal and has also agreed to help develop the young strikers we will have. In normal circumstances I would not offer a very senior player a reduction in wages and ask him to take on more responsibility however the impact of the coronavirus means that we are not working in normal circumstances.”

“Derek is super fit and remains a key part of our playing squad and he will have a big impact next season. He may not start every game but he is a wily fox in the box and I can imagine opponents being concerned if he comes off the bench looking to get us a goal.”
