Peterhead manager Jim McInally reckons that he will be getting the player former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers singled out for praise if former Partick Thistle midfielder Andrew McCarthy re-signs at the Blue Toon.
The 21-year-old joined the Blue Toon in January after a disappointing spell at Queen of the South with both his confidence and his fitness at a low.
McCarthy started just one game before the coronavirus lockdown started in March however he was worked throughout the past three months on both his mental and physical fitness.
McInally reckons that the Blue Toon will see a different player if a deal over next season is agreed once the way forward for football is known with the Balmoor boss saying: “Andrew had lost his way in his career. Not that long-ago Brendan Rodgers came on to the pitch at Parkhead to praise his performance against Celtic in a Premiership game.”
“However, the manager changed at Thistle at a time when he was injured and he never got back in. I tried to get him last summer however he wanted to stay full-time and went to Queen of the South but he never got a chance there as he had a persistent hip problem.”
“He came to us looking to get fit and focused. He is out training all the time and he has worked well with our fitness coach Stuart Hogg throughout the lockdown. He has also faced up to some issues he had away from football with the support of everyone at Peterhead and he is in a much better place overall.”
“If we can get something agreed for next season, we will see a very different player.”
