Peterhead got their season off to a fine start with a comprehensive victory over Montrose in the Alba League Challenge Cup.

Despite a number of injuries through the pre-season, only striker Dave Ross was missing from the squad to face the Third Division side, with summer signings Dennis Wyness, Daniel Moore and Paul Emslie handed starts by Neale Cooper.

And the Toon couldn't have got off to a better start as they took the lead after just seven minutes. Davie Donald and Graeme Sharp combined on the right before the ball was cut back to Wyness.

The former Caley Thistle striker lofted a ball toward the back post, but it curled in at the far post.

Two minutes later, Neil McVitie came close to doubling the lead in similar fashion, his ball from 20-yards crashing back off the crossbar.

Peterhead were well on top, and a Sharp cross found Emslie after, the midfielder nodding narrowly wide of the target.

Montrose came back into the game though, and came close to an equaliser in bizarre fashion. Goalkeeper Scott Bennett's clearance was headed awkwardly backwards by Callum Macdonald, and only a superb save from Paul Jarvie kept the Toon in front.

The visitors had another gilt-edged chance to draw level on the stroke of half-time as fullback Gordon Pope swung in a delightful cross for Daryl Nicol, the youngster nodding his free header wide of the target.

But the Blue Toon side that emerged after the interval was reinvigorated, and they extended their lead five minutes after the restart.

Moore's corner was nodded down by Macdonald and somehow worked its way through a ruck of defenders, and was sliced into his own goal by Gable Endies defender Stephen McNally.

They should have extended their lead further when Martin Bavidge's excellent pass sent Sharp clear down the right, but the winger's attempted pass failed to pick out either McVitie or Wyness.

A minute later, though, a similar move resulted in number three. This time is was Emslie who sent Sharp scampering away down the right, and the former Montrose man played in Wyness to drill home his second of the afternoon from 12 yards.

Peterhead were now growing in confidence, and their fourth was something special indeed.

Emslie picked up a loose ball on the half-way line, and the former Rangers man looked up to see the keeper off his line before sending the ball fully 50 yards into the top corner of the net.

The impressive Wyness was denied a hat-trick when he latched onto Bobby Mann's headed clearance, and lifted an effort over the onrushing Bennett, the striker denied by the upright.

But Mann did provide an assist when his superb lofted pass caught central defender Sean Crighton under the ball, allowing Bavidge through on goal. He evaded a challenge, before rounding Bennett and sliding the ball into the net.

There were chances still for the lead to be extended further. Substitute Conor Gethins slipped in Wyness who lifted the ball towards goal, but Bennett pulled off an outstanding save.

The experienced hitman turned provider for the final chance of the game, weaving his way through the visitors defence before playing in Donald, whose first time shot cleared the crossbar.
