Peterhead secured their first win of the pre-season after coming from behind to defeat Highland League side Huntly last night.

The side was along similar lines to that which had drawn 1-1 with Inverurie Locos, but Graeme Sharp and Martin Bavidge started in place of Ryan Strachan and the injured Conor Gethins.

The returning pair started either side of an experimental midfield, with Daniel Moore in the centre alongside Neil McVitie, and Davie Ross partnering Dennis Wyness in attack.

And it was the Blue Toon who started the brighter of the sides, forcing Huntly's debutant defender Graham Stark to slice wide of his own goal early on.

But the Peterhead defence was looking unusually shaky, and they were left exposed when Adam Naismith's cross found former Blue Tooner Stuart Soane in space in the area, only for the Huntly man to head straight at Jarvie.

At the other end, Sharp's cross from the left found Ross at the near post, but Neil Hastie held comfortably.

Ross was to turn provider for the next effort as Peterhead began to put their opponents under pressure, but Wyness shot narrowly wide of the upright.

However it would be the hosts who took the lead. Paul Jarvie came to claim a Colin Robertson cross, but misjudged the flight of the ball and in the end could only slap weakly at the ball. It fell to Jordan Timmons, and he volleyed home from a tight angle.

But Peterhead would be level after 39 minutes. Neat buildup play saw Stuart Smith drive down the left flank, and his ball into the area was held up by Ross before he laid back into the path of Sharp. The winger took a shot on the half-volley, and although Hastie appeared to have it covered, the ball went straight through the former Clach man and found the net.

And the SFL side went ahead a minute before the interval. Huntly failed to deal with Moore's corner which found Wyness in the penalty area. His shot was blocked by Bavidge in front of Hastie, and although the goalkeeper initially saved from Bavidge's effort the ball fell back to the former Huntly man, who fired high into the net.

The Toon would go on to have the better of a second half interrupted by substitutions, and were first to threaten when Hastie parried a Moore drive. Ross was quick to react but the flag went up against him, although Hastie saved again in any case.

Moore was putting himself about and was presented with a fine chance when he got on the end of McVitie's looping cross, but the former Ross County man nodded wide at the back post.

Peterhead were well on top, and with 20 minutes left, Bavidge was sent clear by Dean Cowie only for Neil Reid to black the striker's shot.

Huntly finally had an effort with 15 minutes left when Michael McGinlay, the son of former Toon coach Dave, flashed a shot across goal a whisker past the upright.

Neale Cooper's side were immediately back on the attack though, and the ball somehow managed to stay out from Bavidge's effort after Sharp flicked on a Moore corner.

A minute later, though, it was 3-1. Moore was again the provider with a delivery from the right, and Sharp nodded home the third at the near post to round out the win.
