| Peterhead finally hosted their first game of 2010 after weather had put paid to all fixtures at Balmoor since the middle of December. Two away games have been played since the turn of the year, and good wins at both Arbroath and Cowdenbeath had given optimism ahead of Brechin’s trip north.
The match began after a minute silence in memory of vice-chairman Les Taylor, who sadly passed away last month.
Although boosted by the pre-match signing of Irish striker Conor Gethins, Peterhead were missing influential defender Bobby Mann, as well as defender Callum Macdonald, goalkeeper Jon Bateman, and striker Scott Mcihie. Brechin had injury problems of their own, forcing them to name just two outfield substitutes.
Peterhead’s injury problems worsened just 10 minutes into the game as on-loan midfielder Nicky Clark tangled with Gary Fusco, and had to be taken off with a suspected fractured wrist. He was replaced by Paul Emslie, the on-loan Rangers man making his home debut.

Barry Wilson took the resultant free kick, finding Graeme Sharp at the back post, but goalkeeper Craig Nelson was untroubled by his back post header. Sharp had another attempt ten minutes later from distance, but the winger saw his effort fly wide of the post.

Brechin came into the game though, and took the lead after 31 minutes. Kevin Byers struck a left-foot shot from the edge of the area which goalkeeper Paul Jarvie looked to have well covered, but as the unfortunate Jon Crawford attempted to block, he turned the ball into the opposite corner of the net.
Mark Docherty came close with a 10-yard header before the interval, but Jarvie made a fine save from the former St Mirren man.
Peterhead’s best chance fell to Martin Bavidge in the opening stages of the second half. The striker met Barry Wilson’s right wing cross, but his header was straight down the throat of Nelson. A good move on the left ended with the ball being flighted towards Sharp in the middle of the area, but the winger’s attempted volley on the turn was easily dealt with.

As Peterhead pressed forward for a leveller, Brechin looked to exploit the gaps they left at the back, and they did just that when they extended their advantage after 75 minutes. A sweeping move saw the ball travel almost the length of the pitch before Rory McAllister slid in Charlie King for a curling effort past Jarvie.
And they added a third nine minutes later. Another break was clinically seized upon by one-time Peterhead player McAllister, the striker drilling home his side’s third goal from the edge of the area to seal what was a deserved win.
