U17’s defeat Morton.

Peterhead FC U17’s squad were on their travels again this Sunday past.  A journey to Airdrie to face Greenock Morton in the league.  Morton kindly agreed to play the game at the Airdrie Sports Complex on a superb 3G surface which not only ensured the game went ahead but also saved us over 2 hours of additional travel.

The bus left a snowy Peterhead at 10.30am. Amazingly no sign of snow once we passed Laurencekirk and arrived at the sports complex shortly before 3pm for the 4pm kick off.

Peterhead started extremely well and Chris Pawlett created a chance after only 2 minutes but his well worked shot struck the underside of the crossbar and was eventually cleared.

After 5 minutes Scott McLeod opened the scoring with a good through ball picked up by Jamie Mac who rolled the ball to Scott who swept the ball low passed the goalkeeper

Peterhead were causing Morton a lot of problems with both Axel and Ian getting forward down the right and left flanks respectively.

The game was played at a fairly hectic pace throughout and despite an early dominance Peterhead failed to create any clearer cut chances. Morton grew in confidence from this and began to push Peterhead backwards winning a number of corners without really threatening.  The first half came to a close with Peterhead a goal for the good but after such a positive start should have had more.

Peterhead created a number of chances in the 2nd half Jamie Mac had two or three chances to be through on goal but poor first touches saw the chance pass.

Jamie Buchan came on with 25 minutes remaining and created a chance straight away, after some good footwork and only the goalkeeper to beat let himself down with the finish dragging the ball past the post.

Peterhead were still only a goal for the good and although under no real pressure from the Morton strike force could not find an elusive 2nd goal to finish the game.  Morton had a number of free kicks from around 25 yards out late on but none troubled Scott Bruce in goal who had little to do the whole game.

With 10 minutes remaining Jamie Buchan chased down a ball that the goalkeeper was always favourite to win and somehow got to the ball first and calmly stroked the ball in with his left foot for the decisive 2nd goal.

A 2-0 victory in the end to Peterhead but credit must go to Morton for the way they played the game with the majority of the team eligible to play at U17’s again next season.

The 17’s are at home next Sunday versus Ayr United. Venue Buchanhave Hearts 2pm K.O.
